West Texas

St. Barnabas belongs to the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas, a part of The Episcopal Church, a Christian community of 2.4 million members in America and abroad, and the Anglican Communion, a global community of 74 million persons in 38 provinces throughout the world. The Diocese is made up of 87 congregations with over 26,000 persons spread across 60 counties.

The Diocese provides resources, leadership, fellowship, and programs as well as governance for its congregations. DWTX directs the ministries of three camps: Camp Capers in Comfort, Mustang Island Conference Center at Port Aransas, and Duncan Park in Colorado.

Our Bishops: Each diocese, or geographic region of The Episcopal Church, functions under a bishop. The Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas is the Rt. Rev. Dr. David G. Read, D.D. who has jurisdiction over the entire diocese. Bishop Suffragan of the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas is the Rt. Rev. Angela Maria Cortiñas.

Diocesan Council: The Council is the governing body for the diocese, appointed to conduct its business according to its constitution and canons. The delegates to Diocesan Council are elected or appointed annually and sent to represent each parish. Diocesan Council is held annually in February.

Diocesan Camps & Conferences Ministry

The Diocese of West Texas is dedicated to offering camping and retreat experiences grounded in Christian faith - set in scenic, natural locations that nurture spiritual connections and growth. As part of the diocese, these camping opportunities are available to the St. Barnabas community and beyond! We encourage you to explore the offerings for children, youth, young adults, families, veterans, and others in the three locations - Camp Capers in the Hill Country, Mustang Island Conference Center near Port Aransas, and Duncan Park in Colorado. Read all about the diocesan camping ministry here.

Camp Capers

Camp Capers, Your Texas Hill Country Home opened its doors to campers in 1947. Camp Capers offers a variety of camps including summer and mid-winter children & youth camps, and weekend retreats such as the Mother/Daughter and Father/Son weekends, Cursillos, church, school, and spiritual retreats, and off-site meetings for organizations.

Mustang Island

Mustang Island Conference Center is a seaside retreat center on 22 acres. The conference center provides a sacred place that offers our guests uninterrupted time for families and retreat guests to share time, enjoy the beach, rest, reflect and experience renewal surrounded by God's coastal creation. This sacred space is most loved for its summertime family camps!

Duncan Park

Duncan Park is a mountaintop get way, located 20 miles west of Boulder, Colorado. This alpine jewel captures the rugged beauty of the surrounding mountains and allows for a true respite from the hustle and bustle of modern life. Duncan Park offers summer camp sessions for junior high school, college students, and adults, plus several Family Camp sessions and hosts retreat weekends.
